Exploring Cultural Hubs and Centers of Activity in Suffolk County

The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office and the Nassau County Sheriff's Department are responsible for civil procedure, evictions, the issuance and enforcement of court orders, the transportation and detention of prisoners, and the operation of county jails. Suffolk County has seen a rapid growth since the 1990 census, when it surpassed Nassau County in population. This growth is attributed to two glaciers that formed Lake Ronkonkoma in Suffolk County and Lake Success in Nassau County. Long Island is home to two Native American reservations, the Poospatula Reserve and the Shinnecock Reservation, both located in Suffolk County.

Despite its larger area, Nassau County still has a much higher population density due to its proximity to New York City. The county is serviced by several airports, rail transportation via the Long Island Railroad and the New York City subway, bus routes through the MTA regional bus operations, Nassau Inter-County Express and Suffolk County Transit, ferry service through NYC Ferry and several smaller ferry companies, and several major highways. On dry nights without clouds or wind, the central part of Suffolk County and the Pine Barrens Forest can be 5 to 10 F (3 to 5 C) colder than the rest of Long Island due to radiation cooling. There have been discussions for decades about building a link to Long Island Sound at locations in Nassau and Suffolk counties, but there are no plans to build such a crossing.

The Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) provides bus service in Nassau County while Suffolk County Transit provides bus service in Suffolk County. Long Island is a culturally and ethnically diverse island with some of the richest and most expensive neighborhoods in the world near the coast as well as working-class areas in all four counties. The term Long Island generally refers only to Nassau and Suffolk counties. The current county of Suffolk was designated as East Riding (of Yorkshire), present-day Brooklyn was part of the West Riding, and present-day Queens and Nassau were part of the larger North Riding.

Nassau County and Suffolk County each have their own government with a county executive running each. The two counties are serviced by the Nassau County Police Department and the Suffolk County Police Department respectively, although several dozen villages and two cities in Nassau County have their own police departments. Major General William Floyd was a member of the Suffolk County militia at the beginning of the conflict with Great Britain. In eastern areas of Suffolk County, it remains semi-rural such as in Greenport on the North Fork or part of The Hamptons area.

The East End Arts Council is one such cultural hub located in Riverhead on Long Island's East End. This organization offers art classes for all ages as well as exhibitions featuring local artists' work.

The Parrish Art Museum is another cultural hub located in Water Mill on Long Island's South Fork. This museum features works from local artists as well as international artists from around the world. The Long Island Museum is located in Stony Brook on Long Island's North Shore. This museum features exhibits on local history as well as art galleries featuring works from local artists.
