SMOKIN' ALS RATED
AS THE # 1 BBQ ON LONG ISLAND!
ZAGAT GUIDE 05/06
AND
BEST BBQ CITY GUIDE 2006

ZAGAT REVIEW: "Al Horowitz knows 'cue" boast barbecue buffs, who beatify the owner-pitmaster for the "exceptional", "slow-cooked" "sinfully smoky meats" he "piles high" at his Bay Shore "roadhouse with a bit of class" ; with "adorable" hog-themed decor, "aromatic", "jazzy" atmosphere and prices that are "so reasonable" it's no wonder this place is so "popular"; unfortunately, "great grub combined with a no-reservations policy" equals sometimes-"intolerable" weekend waits.

CITY GUIDE REVIEW: If you think you've ever had real barbecue on Long Island, think again. Though Southerners may scoff, Smokin' Al's is doing things the right way. All smoking takes place in house and involves 200 degree dry-smoke and hickory wood. The process starts around 3AM nightly, and continues around the clock. Brisket smokes for 13 hours, while the ribs smoke for six hours. All the meat comes in fresh, and even the fries are hand-cut and cooked fresh daily. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, with exposed brick, a half-open kitchen and a full bar. Diners can tuck in to a pulled-pork sandwich, which after hours of being rubbed, mopped and slow-smoked, is marinated with Smokin' Al's Sweet Talkin' sauce and served with fresh cut potato fries and coleslaw. The appetizers are worth mentioning too, and include burnt endz, hush puppies, Brunswick stew and smoked chicken wings. The list of sides is classic, with hearty stuff like collard greens and corn on the cob. Save yourself a trip south: Smokin' Al's is fast becoming famous for the authentic process and skillful blending of flavors that are barbecue's signature. -- Simon Van
